I started reading the HP series because I knew one day my son would probably want to read them. So as a responsible parent(on my part) I wanted to know what was in these very popular and controversial books. I found a well written series of books that echoed many Christian themes. I've read them serveral times each and I would not have a problem if my son, when he's old enough, wanted to read these books.
But again, that's just me.
We are very regular church goers, almost every sunday and also during the festival seasons (lent and advent). Owen goes with us. He has a very strong faith and we talk about God and Jesus alot in our home, in the car, where ever we are and it comes up. He's had a couple of deaths to deal with in the last month or two and he knows that his uncle is in heaven with Jesus, and the cat is down the road at kitty heaven. So really, I don't think these books will affect him adversely when he decides he wants to read them. Now I will be reading them with him the first time, so if anything comes up and he has a question, I can tell him what we believe or explain anything he needs further explanation on if there is something that he doesn't understand. I think as a Christian, that is the best way for my family to do it. :-)
You know we all have different views, I really like all the Harry Potter movies, and allow my children to view them, yet when it comes YU-GI-O I will not..? I grew up watching the sitcom Bewitched, yet I knew it was make believe, and it did not harm me.
Lillie~ You did not offend me in the slightest. I hope that I didn't offend you. I know that every family has to do what is right for thier family. We have friends who feel the same as you, yet they let there boys watch The Hulk, Spiderman, Batman, etc. very violent movies that we wouldn't dream of letting Owen watch. Owen knows about Harry Potter, but he's never seen the movies or readthe books. He's only 4.5. He's not ready. I do however, watch whatever movies he does watch with him, so we can go through them with him and ask him, "Is it right that that person did that?" And talk about it. We talk alot in our house about everything.
Tam~ I watched Bewitched too. I thought it was cool that she could twitch her nose. They made it clear on that show and, I think, the Harry Potter books that magic is not the solution to your problems, and that just because you are famous or are talented, it doesn't mean your life will be easy.

...will have to watch it later I guess, can't open at work. ah shucks.
Hey, MHN, I like your responsible parenting... is this followed by giving bits of the plot away when your son reads it?
nope. only explainations of our family views. Giving away the plot is just WRONG! :-)
